I love German Shepherds and Boxers--and mid-sized to large dogs in general. But all dogs are just great.

Dogs are great!
My favorites are my two Norwich Terriers. If you've seen the Christopher Guest movie "Best in Show" (a must for the dog lover), one of the main dog characters is a Norwich named Winky.

The greatest dog we ever had was a shepherd mix of some kind. He weighed 70 lbs.! He died a year ago and we still miss him so much.

As you said all dogs are great but my favorite is a collie. They are loyal, intelligent and protective. They can be Lassie's with family but Cujo's with strangers. I have had 4 of them in my life and they are great.

Siberian Huskies(closest thing to a wolf that I can own), Doberman Pinscers, and Rottweillers, in that order.
