i own a shop ,and that's what i do for a hobby now but there was time when i almost decided to do it full time, the best way to learn this is get a job at a body shop,or take a trade school course on it,you cant go right into business on this without having the money and the know how,and with the price of paint and materials going up every day,it pays to know what your doing, its a good trade to get in to,but he,d be better of working for somebody else until he can get some experience at this, its a hard business to make a living at,i can tell you this the competition is really bad out there right now, other shops will under cut any price made these days just to get the job,and its just called business, but if he wants to do it bad enough he can get a job,and start out from the bottom, and work his way up,it takes a while to learn all about it,and to this day no one person knows it all,we all learn something new every day about it,good luck ,i hope he makes it.

well, buy a bunch of books and read on the basics, buy about 6 junk cars or ask if you can do prep work by working for free at a body shop------ then at 45 years old you develop a reaction to the solvents in the paint and now you spend the rest of the day standing by the freeway with a cardboard sign--because all you ever learned was to paint.---- You need to learn all aspects of body work---and the easiest way to get a job doing it is still a trade school-----I don't care if he doesn't want to go---who will hire him or train him if he doesn't show some effort up-front ?
