Why would you want to leave the light off for 18 hours ? Do you mean every day or are you talking about just for one day ? The Beardie needs the light for warmth but also to mimic real conditions . You should have the light on for 8-12 hours a day . I increase the time the light is on during the summer months . You want to try to mimic natural conditions as much as you can .Night time temps . should not be below be 75 .He needs a dark period too . But if you mean in order to move the reptile or say your electric goes off , it is a good idea to have on hand an emergency heat source ,like hand warmers or a heating pad that will plug into your car lighter just for such emergencies .The more you can provide an environment closer to what he would naturally have , the healthier and happier he will be .

if this is a one time thing because you have a long drive or something it should not be a problem. but if you are thinking about this for a long period of time wal-mart has 24 hour timers for outlets ranging in price from 4.95 to 5.75 the cheaper has one time setting for on and one for off. the more exp. you can set it for multiple times throughout the day or night. if all necessary uva and uvb heat diet etc is being met 18 hours without artificial light is not detramental. open a drape in the room allow natural light to get in. do not set the tank directly in the light though without observation. depending on your setup the room temp air flow through the tank etc. you could bake him.

both answers are close. yes it does provide heat, but the beardie also needs the uva and uvb rays that the light gives off. it helps in the digestive process as well as other necessities. i have had beardies for years and also breed them. you need to do a 12/hr-12/hr cycle. 12 hrs on and 12 hrs off. if it gets too cold at night...DO NOT LEAVE THE UV LIGHT ON!!!! this will do more harm than good. get an infrared light. it will keep the tank warm enough at night.
