Canadians don't have a problem with legal immigration. However here is what I do know about working in Canada without being a citizen of the country.
MY husband had a warrant job to do in Canada. The Canadian company was suppose to report it to there government and border patrol. When stopped at the border and questioned as to what his visit to canada was for he told them. The paper work was not there so he got turned away. Husband contacted his American company. The company faxed the paper work to the border Authorities. However there was still something missing. ON that second time the guard point blank told my husband that the paperwork has to be in exact order that is he tried to go through again and it wasn't exact then he would be banned from Canada for a year, that included even person visits. The Canadian company paids My husband company so taxes is not the issue. Seeing as it is a warrant job. No monies would be exchanged.
So Canadians might not be uptight about immigration however try to work in Canada without the work permit being filled correctly!!!
The freelance engineer who was suppose meet up with him was banned for a year!

Canada has been screwed up for over a century with having to deal with two languages. Americans on the other hand have been blessed with one language for over two centuries.
Americans see the problems of Canada dealing with two languages and do not want the same mess here. If the immigrants to the USA would actually learn English, a lot of the issues Americans have with the invasion from the south would be removed. The remainder of the problem would be removed if the illegals were removed also.

First I think Canada makes it a point to educate Canadians from kids that diversity is cool
Second the Canadian immigration is more open. There is plenty of cases you can file to be legal even if you entered illegally and there is lot of free resources to help you with that.Only an idiot will stay illegally in Canada

Take a look at Canada's requirements and their point system of accepting Immigrants then take a look at the USA and the 'open door let anyone in' system that has been going on.
There is a difference.
Immigration can and will bankrupt the USA economy if the policies and practices arent changed. Its not even debatable whehter this will or will not happen.

Could this be why? They're not as over populated as we are.
With births slowing, Canada is reaching a unique situation, said Laurent Martel, a Statistics Canada analyst. "We're heading towards a point where immigration will be the only source of growth in Canada," he said.
About 1.2 million new immigrants accounted for most of Canada's growth over the five years, far outpacing the addition of 400,000 native-born citizens, for a total population of 31.6 million.

Hmmmm, you have an interestintg point, but isn't the main difference that Canada doesn't have 11.5 MILLION illegal Mexicans inundating their country?
By the way, the more generous Canada's welfare state, the more taxes Canadians have to pay to support these immigrants. Isn't that hurting the Canadian working class?

Americans are not uptight about immigration....only illegal immigration.
Canada would feel the same way if they were invaded by millions. They are fortunate enough not to be on the Mexico border.

Perhaps it has a little to do with a few of the hijackers who flew out of Portland, Maine on their way to Logan Airport to carry out the events of 9/11 - after entering Maine from Canada.

I think you are comparing apples to oranges in this instance. Which laws should the country enforce and which laws should the country ignore would be more appropriate I think when it comes to the issue of illegal immigration.
If anyone is doing something illegally, they should be prevented from doing whatever it is they are doing. Be it breaking into someones car, home, or country. If one wants to ignore the immigration laws, why not ignore other laws as well?

What the...oh, yeah.....
Sorry, LHFP, I wasn't going to post, but then I saw that Chi and I actually agreed on something...once I picked myself up off the floor, I just *had* to say something!
And, like so many others said, Canada doesn't have millions of unskilled workers streaming across their borders.
Do you know anyone who lives there? Socialized medicine isn't all it's cracked up to be...lots of Canadians come here and pay our outrageous prices - at least they can get something *done* here.
