A big deal is being made regarding the athletes in big sport's programs and their lack of education at these colleges.
I think that it is like the apprentice system, they go to school for the purpose of a sport's career, and why is it a big deal?
These programs bring a ton of attention and money to these schools and allow many kids, who may not be involved in sports, to go there.
What do you think?

Where is the responsibility of the student/athlete?
It is ridiculous to think they don't know what they are getting into, its a gamble.
How many would be going to college and having these opprtunities if it wasn't for theit physical prowess. PLease, I'm so tired of this "victim" thing--if it doesn't work out, do something else with your life like everyone else

It's a big deal because the NCAA are being hypocrites. heres why:

I agree that for a few athletes it is an apprentice like system (Oden, Durant this year). But the NCAA screams and yells about their commitment to the STUDENT-athlete. Meaning Student first, athlete second. Well its a fact that to be eligible for the second semester of school (to play) the basis is the 1st semester. Meaning the student athlete do not need to go to class 2nd semester. What the hell type of system is that?
Secondly, less that 1 percent of these players (in all sports) will be able to earn a living at their sport. So what are they being apprenticed to do? The schools bring the players in and make money for their school but they aren't committed to educating the players.
Finally, money made from sports dosen't go into scholarship coffers for the general student population. It goes to facilities, coaches salaries, travel, etc (although the income from one sport is distributed to the entire athletic program of each school.
Thats why its a big deal.
