I have a 1992 Mitsubishi Galant, and the transmission slips when it wants to go into overdrive (4th). I've been driving it with the overdrive button off, and it's been fine. If I'm above 40mph, I can press the button and it will go into 4th and drive perfectly. Some websites have mentioned that some Mitsubishi transmission control units are prone to capacitor leaking- could that be my problem, or is it more likely a bad solenoid, or another internal problem with the transmission? I've been trying to look inside the transmission control unit, but it's not easy to get it from under the dash. Thanks!

The fluid is good- I had the transmission flushed (not just drained) and the filter replaced about a year ago, and the fluid looks beautiful. I know flushing often causes problems, but it only slips just at the point where it shifts from third to fourth. Are there any internal problems that could cause that?

Thanks everyone for answering, and one answer especially seems reasonable. I'll order a new filter. My wife bought the car used before I knew her, and we've brought it to above 160k- it's been a good car so far. (By the way, I wasn't thinking that the capacitor was leaking transmission fluid, but electrolyte inside the barrel type capacitors.) I appreciate the help!

did you try tranny screen. could be clogged not letting enough fluid to drop up on shift points.

hi, im just wondering if you are trying to shift it to overdrive below 40mph which it will never do below 40mph. its too slow to be on top gear . it will lag the engine. if this is the case you are trying to solve a problem that is not there. take it to the dealer and do a drive test just to confirm slippage.
when an automatic trany slips it will slip on all gears.
also, when you are just about 40mph the trany will try to decide to up shift or stay on gear..depends on the load and gas pedal position. maybe you are at that point which is also normal. that is why you have that overdrive button to make it stay on 3rd. its just the engineering design of the car. also wondering if you got this car new or used. : )

Ok a capacitor is an electronic device it holds no fluid as for the TCU its located inside the tranny more likely anything located under your dash would be the ECU and it being a front wheel drive car its going to really suck trying to fix it transmission shop is best way to go.

Have you checked the shifting cable? Some times it could be loose at whatever gear that's giving you problems.

Man it really sounds internal usually Galants have had a bad rap on torque converters. I would definately have a mech. look at it.

the first thing to check is the level of fluid on your transmission dipstick, if its low then it could cause it to skip, smell the dipstick, if it smells like its really burnt you trans could be bad...as far as the solenoid, no clue
