The black list:
We learned nothing. There is a black list today.... How many conservatives are there in Hollywood? Not many and fewer every day.
The witch hunt:
We learned nothing. I would point to situations like the Scooter Libby trial, the Duke Lacrosse team mess, and Tom DeLay.
The hearings:
Did America learn from it or did we just switch sides?

In the early days of what is now called McCarthyism, it was shown that there were Communists working in some high posts in the federal government under FDR. Isn't it really interesting, that though they were found guilty and jailed, now it is unknown and McCarthy is looked down on, like he was a traitor. These other people reported to Stalin's intelligence service. They were the traitors, not McCarthy. And while McCarthy accused a lot of Hollywood types of Communism in his day, look at them now! They are proud to be un-American, but I am sure they insist on being paid in American currency.
Don't bother to mention this in school, it will get you a low grade. The Communists have run the teacher's unions for a long time. Most teachers don't know or accept it, but it is true, none the less.

In a nutshell...
The government got scared. They decided one group of people were bad because they believed things the current majority of Americans didn't. The government blamed this group for all the problems.
Then, because the government had also gotten the people to also be scared, the government starting hunting down and prosecuting (some say persecuting) anyone who might possibly have any connection to this group.
There were no limits to how deep or broad the investigation was allowed to go, and the government broke many laws and violated the constitution many times -- all justified (they claimed) because of how much a threat these people were, and how much the government needed to stop them.
Eventually, years lated, people realized that they were chasing a bogeyman -- nothing more than idea that had been around for a long time. They stopped being afraid, and stop punishing people for disagreeing with them.
And then we forgot all that, and did it again.

This drunken Senator created a black list which put people out of work and had other make up lies in order to get the committee on their side.
John Wayne was the worst, he gave them names of people to destroy while he had no knowledge of the truth. But he was made a hero for screwing others.
