I gave birth to my daughter eight weeks ago, and I have just got my first period since having her. So far it has lasted eight days, which is way long for me. Is this alright? Or could something be wrong?

I stopped breastfeeding about 2 weeks ago, my milk has totally dried up now. After I had her, I bled for 5 weeks straight.

Your uterus has a lot of work to do to get back in shape after a birth of a child. It is normal to bleed heavily the first few periods. It is trying to get back to the state pre-pregnancy and there is alot of old tissue that does not come out at birth, that comes out during your first few periods. So don't worry, you are fine.

post partum bleeding is due to body cleansing the uterus of old blood. In order to expedite it ayurveda recommends a special diet. However, diet is not paid much attention in west. Now if old blood still remains, body takes earliest opportunity to clean it out. Stopping breast feeding increases estrogen/progesterone ratio causing bleeding to start. Breast feed keeps progesterone to some level, which does not allow cycles to start early.

one week is not really long, considering that it is first period after preganancy. Take 4 dates (soaked 2 hours) at breakfast every day. Black seesame seeds 1 tsp chewed with jaggery twice a day for 1 month will also help.

Have you been breastfeeding? I know if you breastfeed you become regular again quicker. I only breastfed my son for a couple weeks so I bled on a funny schedule for a couple months. Call the doctor and maybe talk to a nurse, they would be able to tell you. Hope everything goes well!
