As a true metalhead, (I HATE nu-metal...for my metal interests see my profile), I began to ponder this. Seeing as though none / barely any of the bands that started this genre hail from the nations of Scandinavia, why is it that so many of the greatest metal bands ever are from that region? Please, I am looking for real answers here, preferably more than few words.
Also, I am NOT looking for responses like this:

"Wtf! lol None of the Best metal bands r from there! lol! every1 knows Korn and system of adown are the best ever lol!"

I am looking for responses from people who actually know what they are talking about, and who's taste in metal is beyond the American metal world.

Good question. My speculation would be that after the early black metal anti-christian bands (mayhem, emperor, burzum, the lot...) descended, they created an opening for the hateful, non conformist minorities in Norway and Finland.

Instead of satanistic, pagan metal bands started to form (or the ones already formed, to rise. Amon Amarth, for example was formed sometime in 1990, I believe).
With the rise of the neo-pagan religions, the interest in scandinavian mithology started to rise and the so-called viking metal bands started to gain listeners and popularity.
Nowadays you will find that as a means of being non-conformist, it is almost fashionable to be a pagan, odinist or asatruar in the scandinavian countries. 16 year old kids wear huge Mjollners around their necks and listen to bands like Ensiferum, Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Eluviate (sp?), Amon Amarth, Turisas, Tyr.... the likes.

On the other hand, if you are referring to the melodic metal scene (both melodic power and melodic death) with the protagonists like Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Children of Bodom, Noumena, Insomnium, Machine Men, Trio Niskalaukaus...
I believe the center of developement was the Finnvox studios with a couple of individuals who promoted metal music quite seriously over a short, intense period. This effort gave a couple of keyboard-based bands who all have a very similar sound to them.

The only band that stands out of these two main groups is Hammerfall. They were formed in mid-nineties and play heavy metal. I don't think there is any special reason for their popularity. They played heavy metal in the time when heavy metal was completely dead world-wide. The few true metal fans welcomed them as the fresh wind in music and when metal started to gain popularity again, HF had a small, but very firm and loyal fanbase that started to spread their fame among the new generation of metal fans.

This is all based on my personal experience, opinion and speculation, so I might be wrong with some details up there. Anyway, I hope it helps.

Stay metal!
