You have to use the wireless adapter if you want to hook up XBL wirelessly. You don't have to buy the one from MS. You can use a 3rd party gaming wireless adapter as long as it says it's compatible with the 360.
If you don't mind the wires, then you can just hook up the 360 to the cable modem or router with an ethernet cable.

yes,it is propriety so you cant just use a usb dongle from a wireless router thats why ps3 is better its already included and eventually sony will get their online gaming in order.

NO it my understanding that you do not have to have the x box360 to use the box live wireless, they should be separate.
