The first ten amendments, known as the Bill of Rights, protects basic freedoms of citizens.

The Constitution codifies and defines the roles of various agencies of government and sets limits on government agencies. Much of our protection comes from the structure of the government and the checks and balances which are built into the document. The three branches of government tend to prevent any one branch from having too much power, and that protects all of us.

This is outside my area of specialty, but I thought the Bill of Rights was to protect our rights. Unfortunately, this was shredded by the Patriot Act.

We are slowly losing our rights. It's up to people (not a document) to preserve rights.
