Midwest location. Had to have old tree roots dug up about a month prior, due to plumbing issues. There are lots of trees behind my fence. The dust is fine.

Where in the back yard? Around wood? Could be termites or could be carpenter ants, or could be wood borers.
The question leaves much unsaid. Need more information. How big are the piles? Are you sure it is wood?
Suggest calling your local pest control operator. They can easily assess the problem. Probably over the phone. Smile

Could be a number of insects. We have had a beetle looking bug, a bee of sorts and wood ants do the same thing. Could also be termites. Try to inspect the site they are in better.

I think it is a type of borer. I had them in a sick tree and they produced piles of sawdust every day under the tree. If you listened carefully you could actually hear them gnawing away. They may be in the roots now tree is dead.

Theres a low tree stump in our yard that always seems to be covered in sawdust too. I see ants on it all the time. Watch out for fire ants or termites.

Termites seems very feasible. Be sure not to have wood touching your home or it will be next. They are susceptible to regular pesticides and should be easy to get rid of. May you find an end to this problem soon.

Check for carpenter ants, they usually leave piles of fine saw dust..

please use the edit to add what the others asked re: your post. i suspect the same if it's near a tree...carpenter ants, carpenter bees. for a quick test, do a little digging beneath the piles. no bugs= a tree or timber related problem.

Could be a type of bees if there is unfinished furniture above where the piles are.

Much depends on your location. In the south (e.g., California), termites are a distinct possibility. In the north (e.g. near Seattle) there are no termites.
