they are called"glass fish" the stripes are painted on with a special paint, and it fades with time

Magic is exactly right. Dye injected fish is the cruelest sales gimmick that even surpasses bettas in a vase with a plant. 70% of fish used for this purpose die in the process. There is a very low mortality rate for the fish that live to the sale point after bought. To achieve this dye process, the fish are first dipped in a caustic solution that strips them of their slime coat and roughens their scales so as to accept the dye. The other method is by injection, which means that these fish have colored liquid floating underneath their skin which slowly deteriorates them from the inside out. As Magic said, please, please boycott this horrific fad and refuse to buy dyed fish. Thanks!

That is a glass foish that has had dye injected into it. it's a really cruel process and causes significant health problems. I would suggest that everyone boycott these "painted" fish of all types!

By the sounds of other answerers, you may be talking about glass fish.
