Is it considered active labor when the water breaks or when you start dialating? I was dialated 2 cm for a couple weeks, but having hard contractions before my water broke....I think my lack of sleep is making me thing too much. That is just something I would like to know.

Ok, that question is completely stupid....I seriously need sleep lol. I hear people say they were in labor and they were in active labor. I was just wondering.

I had my baby 2 weeks ago...I was dialated to a 2 for 2 weeks and when I got to the hospital I was having contractions 4 minutes apart and I sat there fro 2 hours having contractions that were 1 to 3 minutes apart. At about 8:30pm my water broke and I had my baby at 10:41pm. I know I dialated really fast after my water broke and they almost didn't have time to give me the epidural.

Active labor is when things really get rolling. Your contractions become more frequent, longer, and stronger, and your cervix begins dilating faster, going from about 4 to 10 centimeters. (The last part of active labor, when the cervix dilates from 8 to 10 centimeters, is called transition...In contrast to early labor, you'll no longer be able to talk through the contractions. Toward the end of active labor your baby may begin to descend, though he might have started to descend earlier or he might not start until the next stage. woman i would be in bed if i were u * a 2 week old? u know u need your rest..lol*
Congrats!!!!

From personal experience, I found out you are not in active labor until you're 3-4 cms, and another situation happen w/ my friend that recently had her son. her water broke and 8 hours into her hospital stay, the mid-wive finally told her she is now in active labor after she reached four cms. It's kinda fraustration, but my opinion, i feel it's active labor when those contractions are coming every 4 mins, good luck w/ your labor, if you had your baby, Congrats.

Active Labor is when you are having regular contractions that cause dialation. The water breaking is (supposedly) a direct result of contraction.

Labour isn't considered until once your cervix has dilated to 3cms. With my 1st baby, my waters stayed intact until I was pushing out the head at which point they exploded - ouch! It was all so fast that the midwife didn't even have a chance to enquire whether my waters were still intact or not. The waters can break 24 hours or more before labour commences (as with my 2nd baby).

cervix is fully effaced and dialation goes from 4-8 cm.

That is active labor
