Other than gasoline, I don't know. My husband used gasoline to remove the tar then used a good soap to remove the gasoline. Be careful with the shoes though. It will also ruin the rubber on the bottom of them. You may need to chunk those and get some new ones.

WD-40 works great to remove roofing tar from hands and tools, but tends to leave them a bit slippery until it is washed off itself.

It could work for your shoes, but depending on what they are made of, it may just disolve tar enough to soak deeper into pourous materials.

Yes, like someone said earlier, use WD-40. I'm a plumber and when we use tar under a tub, it can get pretty messy. The WD-40 is a lifesaver. It's kickass! Good luck.

kerosene will remove it. and that is safer than gasoline. you could use Go Jo hand cleaner on the shoes, get the go jo with the pumice to scrub it off a bit easier. then you can use it to clean your hands when you are done. that's how i clean my tools, and the work boots too. you can find gojo at any auto parts or hardware store. good luck, i know this will work for ya.

Used motor oil will work good for the tools. Let them soak for a few days. You should be able to wipe them clean.
