Actually the simple answer is... it's a completely different sport. They may both be called football, but so is soccer in other countries. The skills for Aussie Football and American is completely different, there is more strategies offensively and defensively that are involved. Just because you can throw doesn't make you a QB, just because you can run doesn't make you a running back. Aussie Football is cool, but I'll stick good old American football! I don't think a single Aussie player has ever crossed over.

Well first of all there are ex AFL players in the NFL. Ben Graham is currently a kicker for the Jets and Matt McBriar is a kicker for the Cowboys- both doing pretty well. Darren Bennett was extremely successful in the NFL- I think he played for 3-4 NFL teams. Saverio Rocca is currently on trial with Buffalo I think. Although the pay may be much larger it is a long hard road for AFL players to make the transition. The only real position an AFL player will fit into is as a punter. They would be leaving a sport that they are successful in and moving to a new country to try and make the roster. Most players would have families and moving to a new country would be a big change in lifestyle. I know that many AFL players see NFL as a possibility once their AFL career ends. Most AFL players retire in their early thirties so this leaves plenty of years to give the NFL a crack. I'm sure that in the future you will see a lot more Australian punters in the NFL because they have the ability to kick the ball a long way!

To Joe C: I can only assume you've never donned the pads and played the game yourself to find out how sissy of a sport it is. Anyone who has ever played gridiron would never say such a thing. Likewise, anyone who has ever understood and played rugby (union or league) or Aussie Rules football wouldn't say such an ignorant remark either. All of them are rough sports, that produce career-ending injuries and some nasty tactics by a handful of players.

Regarding the question: I imagine the competition to play Aussie Rules is enough that no one really thinks beyond that. I mean, who would be so good and therefore bored playing Aussie Rules that they would say, I think I'll move on and try the NFL in America? Same with rugby. I suspect the money is good enough in all of these venues to satisfy each game's top players.

I agree with the answer right above mine.. why train a guy from scratch when you have a deep talent pool right here in the USA of guys who have been playing by our rules since junior high school? I agree also with the person who mentioned kickers though - It seems like the NFL will give anyone that can kick the ball 50+ yards a shot.
Oh, and Joe C. - Pads are for sissys? Yeah, dude. Nothing says "MANLY" like a career ending spinal injury. If you wanna watch a buncha fat-headed white dudes gouging each other in the testicles, then Aussie rules football is for YOU!

actually there are a few players who have crossed over, and the NFL are actively and openly seeking to recruit more and more aussie rules players.
best fitness and agility, l(ook how long one player is on the field per match, constant running), best kick, best hand eye and ball handling coordination in all weather. I believe only 5 have had careers but some fairly notable. We have plenty of Americans playing sport here, why should they feel affronted when some of us play over there?

ps the fat headed ball gaugers are rugby dudes.

They do, the kicking ability of our afl stars make them highly prized in the nfl and there are several over there. Grid Iron is not Aussie Rules and therefor why would anyone want to play it (can you guess my fav. code)

I don't know if he played football in Austrailia, but the booming punts of Mat McBriar on the Dallas Cowboys makes him an excellent puntah from down undah

Why would any NFL team a guy with no American football experience to a contract? They wouldn't, no need, there are plenty of qualified players right here to pick from.
