I know a lot of happy people who identify as Goth; it's just a stereotype that they are always sad.

For Goth people who often do seem so, it's probably because Gothicism is very open and accepting of all emotions, seeing them all as real and valid and not something to be shunned and hidden with fake smiles as we often do in the non-Goth world. Alternatively, Goths are sometimes more artistic, and artists are, supposedly, tortured souls.

That's my explanation.

They're not. Although I wouldn't call many goths perky, they have their moods like anyone else. I've never know a goth who doesn't smile and laugh sometimes. Teen goths, who aren't goths at all, tend to pretend that they're constantly mopey because they think it makes them deep and they buy into the stereotype. Real, adult goths can be happy, depressed, but they are usually somewhere in between. When they are sad, it's for justifiable reasons, like they are contemplating the fact that they and all that they love will die and be forgotten. Who wouldn't be depressed about that?

Hmm what a blanket question. Do you mean to say EVERYONE who dresses "goth" is ALWAYS sad? Tsk, tsk.
I know people who you'd probably consider goth that laugh, have fun and everything. Wow, who'd have thought?!
It's because not everyone's the same. You can't put a label on a group of people because of the way they dress.

And this question is in the LGBT section because.....??

Goths actually aren't sad. They just have a taste for the macabre. They find sunny, happy, pink-clad, tanned, blonde Californians depressing!

Befriend a Goth, and you'll find out for yourself how enlightened they are. There's so much more to the culture than meets the eye - it's just easier for people to judge than to learn.

It's because they take so many pictures of themselves for MySpace, they've lost their souls. Just kidding!

See, what you and I just did? That's called stereotyping. It's ridiculous when you actually mean it. Not all goths are sad. I assume you're reffering to the subculture that stereotypically wears all black (nail polish included) and has terrible taste in hairstyles?

They're not all sad. And it's been my own personal experience that the goth kids at my school are generally cool people. The ones who say things like "Nobody understands me" and emo crap like that... they're just starved for attention.

I guess ome might actually be depressed and all, but for the most part, they want attention.

not always. not even half the time actually. that's just a stereotype.
the only group that agrees it's always sad is emo. don't confuse them with goth.
wrong section by the way.

The darkness they surround themselves in - becomes depressing.

Because they dress dreadfully dull, drab, depressing and they poison their minds with angry music, darling.
