Yeah, fix the problem. You could get the light reset by a dealer, but whatever set it off will just set it off again.

The best and least costly way is to fix whatever is wrong with the vehicle which will turn the light off.
The light is there for a reason and it signals that some thing is wrong, you may have to take the car to a specialist who can test the electronics,it may be as small as a sensor that needs replacing or something bigger.
I don't want to alarm you but you could find yourself unable to start the car when you least expect it.

With that vintage Beemer, there is no easy or cheap way to extinguish the light.
It must be turned off with a diagnostic tool or after-market scanner, all of which are very expensive.
If you merely remove the bulb, you run the risk of emissions test failure, and besides, when there is something triggering the light, there is SOMETHING under the hood that needs attention.
Look in the Yellow Pages for a repair shop that specializes in European automobile repair, and ask for a diagnostic quote.

take it to a local parts store they can hook up the electronic device they have and it will tell you what is wrong with your car that is making the light come on. check engine means just that. check it.. with the scope. it hooks into the computer of your car and gives a code.

You should get your engine tested to finid out why the check engine light is on...It could be a smog problem but could be something more serious.
