The War in Iraq is the biggest issue in the short term. Mind you, I do not say terrorism, since the war (and U.S. involvement) is, according to the United States Department of State, primarily responsible for world terrorism. If the U.S. were to withdraw from Iraq, terrorism would decrease sharply.

The war in Iraq threatens to exasperate the entire Middle East situation and to develop into a wider war. Prior to the U.S. invasion, Sunni-Shiite differences were of little importance; now however, Islamic states are lining up on either side of this issue.

Furthermore, U.S interests in Iraq are distracting it from other important issues in the world. No resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict is in sight because of the Iraq war. The U.S. cannot effectively work to settle the conflict with Iran. The genocide in Darfur continues unabated. Zimbabwe has been all but forgotten. Until his trip this week, President Bush was not even aware that Latin America existed.

Hopefully, Iraq will be a short-term problem (if we ignore the fact that the war has already lasted longer than U.S. involvement in World War II.) In the long term, global warming promises to be more serious than any war.

With global warming, coastal cities will be flooded, displacing millions if not billions of people. Agricultural production promises to fall. Lifestyles will be interrupted. Some of these effects have already been seen.

Civil wars and other conflicts will increase as people struggle to deal with the effects of global warming.

Global warming is an easy answer, but reduction in population expansion in developed countries is as important if not more important. I think it is air and water pollution because withought adequate air and water how would humans survive??? For example, Mexico City has soo much pollution in their air that they were the first city to sell bottled oxygen on the streets!!!!
