The Superconducting Supercollider is a proton on proton collider 54 miles around that was being constructed in Texas before it was cancelled in 1993 by congress|
---
Now the question is, should it be resurrected?
---
The Large Hadron Collider is now being constructed in Europe by the European Laboratory of Particle Physics (CERN)| It will be operational late this year| It will be a particle accellerator at 14 trillion electron volts which is seven times more powerful than the Tevatron, which is at present, the most powerful accellerator in the world.
---
The LHC, it is hoped, will verify such phenomena as the Higgs particle (that gives all other subatomic particles their mass), supersymmetry, micro-black holes, and extra dimensions|
---
The SSC has an energy of 40 TEV|
-
Although the luminosity of the SSC is considerably lower than the LHC, the higher energy could be an advantage

Jim, I think I put this in the same category as astronomy. What on earth good is it? Does it grow crops? Deter our enemies? Make clean water? Granted it does let us know about the Higgs particle, but we seem to have gotten along for a couple of millenia without that knowledge. Show me something practical that comes from it beside keeping physicists from being homeless and I'll re-consider.
