I've never heard of a US college caring if a student was applying as a commuter or as an on-campus resident.

I'm not sure what BU is, or where you live, but generally, I don't think it makes a difference in your admission if you are planning to commute or live on campus. Unless, of course, they don't have much housing space and by putting that you will be residential, they think they may have to allot you a psace that they don't have. but that would be an awful thing for a college to do. They're not suppose to rely on housing for their admissions. I guess it depends. I'm not sure if I helped much but my best advice would maybe be to try for an apartment NEAR and CLOSE TO campus...???
