maybe someone could tell me why its bad to smoke while you have children? i quit smoking while i was pregnant but i'm having a hard time with it now that he's out. my dh still smokes (outside only) so he's no help at all. i've had two cigarettes outside but i'm worried if both dh and i are smoking we'll get lazy and start doing it in the house.

what are the health risks to my baby if we're smoking? maybe that will encourage me to not start this awful habit again.

There are a bunch of reasons. I had to convince myself too. ranging from a higher risk of autism to hyperactivity, to asthma, to retardation. But the one that kills me is that newborns who are exposed to cigarette smoke are more liklely to have an occurence of SIDS or sudden infant death syndrome. Their lungs don't develop as well and they have a higher risk of sleep apnea. I could just imagine my little girl turning blue because of something stupid i was doing and her life is more important to me than my nic fix.

sorry i had to add this once i red bianca's reponse. Don't be a *****. She is obviously trying to do the right thing and quit smoking and is looking for motivation not insults and jeering. Take advice from your mother and if you don't have something nice to say then keep your mouth shut.

Secondhand somke increases the risk of SIDS. I quit smoking while I was pregnant and my baby will be 2 weeks tomorrow and I have not once wanted to smoke. I know that I want to give my baby the best chance to a healthy life as I can. Think about yourself too...When your baby gets older you dont want him having asthma or learning disabilities. You can do it, I have faith in you! It is a nasty habit, but just think about how much better you felt when you weren't smoking!

smoke being on someones clothes is bad for babies. I took my son to the hospital once and they asked if anyone in the home smokes. We told him that my boyfriend smokes but he does it outside. The Doctor said that can still be bad for the baby because the smoke is on the clothes and can cause asthma and make colds and sinus problems worse and cause coughing. There is a lot of problems it can cause or make worse.
The reason I don't do things bad for my health is my children. I want to be here for them as long as possible and i want to have a healthy life. If i get ill i will know it is not something i brought on myself. I think a lot of the reason i am so passionate about this is that my dad died when i was 5 from a heart attack. i am 22 now and i see my moms health going down hill. she is in her late 40's. I know that if she doesn't make some changes in her life that she won't be here much longer. She says that she loves her grandkids, but i tell her that i she loved them she would want to be her for them, and do what she needs to do for her health like stop smoking. Its sad because my 4year old daughter know she has health problems and my little girl worries about her. She tells me "who will be my grandma when nanny dies?"

Ear infections, Respiratory Problems, Allergies, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - just to name a few. Also, if you smoke your child is more likely to smoke when they get older. And it could be sooner than you think. If you want to quit - try taking Wellbutrin and use the Nicotine Patches - that is how I quit. And I would never go back. Good luck:-)

There are so many reasons not to smoke around your baby it would be impossible to list them all. Here are a few:

DEADLY STATS
* If both parents smoke, baby's SIDS risk is 3½ times greater than if neither parent smokes.
* If mother smokes, but father doesn't, baby's risk is 2 times greater.
* If father smokes, but mother doesn't, baby's risk is 1½ times greater.

Babies absorb dangerous chemicals from parents who smoke, even if they take care to light up outside, a study has found.

Up to 90 per cent of the nicotine from cigarette smoke can stick to walls, clothes, hair and skin, Georg Matt, a professor at San Diego State University, found.

His early research suggests the chemicals from this 'third hand smoke' can be swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin of non-smokers, putting babies at particular risk.

The youngsters absorbed the harmful chemicals simply from touching furniture in a smoker's house, or hugging their mothers after they had a cigarette.

The risks of second-hand smoke are already known. Babies and children exposed to a smoky atmosphere are twice as likely to have asthma attacks and chest infections, and more likely to need hospital care in their first year of life. They are also at higher risk of crib death.

A nicotine byproduct called cotinine was found in the babies' urine and hair shafts even when their parents took care to smoke outside the house. This was seven times higher than levels found in babies with non-smoking parents.

well for starters my nephew , now 10, has serious ashma and has to go to the hospital occasionally for breathing treatments. he will be on meds his entire life, very very expensive meds without insurance that cost around $270.00 a month. i just quit myself because i hav e a 4 month old and i know its tuff. There is also an increase in ear infections and general bronchitus and pnemonia. Wait till your up for 3 days with no sleep and still see if its not a good idea to quit. good luck to you. remember its for your health also

secondhand smoke is worse than the smoke you receive by smoking the actual cigarette/cigar, etc. it is harmful to both you and your child b/c it causes cancer. i do not know if there are any other specialized reasons for it being harmful for babies in particular. perhaps is affects their growth and development. that would make sense. anyway that's all i know.

OUTSIDE is okay, but studys show that if you smoke around your baby it increases their chances of everything form asthma to cancer. And when they are exposed to second hand smoke their chance of getting caner is more than double the risk for you. Could you live with yourself if your baby got cancer and you didnt?

1. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
2. Asthma.
3. Bronchialitis.
4. Developmental Delays.
5. Cancer.
6. Parents dying of stroke, heart attack or cancer.

I think those reasons are enough, don't you?
