Bess shoots herself to warn the highwayman. The gun was bound pointed at her, so she would die if she shot the gun. Tim the ostler tells the redcoats about where the highwayman will be because he knows from listening in on their conversation. Tim is jealous of the highwayman and loves Bess, so he tries to get rid of the highwayman.

She knew the Highwayman (her sweetheart) was about to die if he rode up to the inn. She shot herself to warn him & let him know there was a trap.
