Brown discharge is generally from old blood. If it is in small spotting amts, then it is probably normal. If if continues, you may want to check for hormonal changes- meds, pregnancy etc.

Body has its own intelligence. As most agree, brown blood is always old blood. March is the month when body goes in detoxifying mood, see:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/ayurvedaonline/message/9351
Body is preparing for the fertile season.
Body uses menstrual cycle to throw away the impurities in the blood. It does not do thorough clense every month, just as you too accumulate laundry and then run the machine once in 2-3 days.
There is nothing to worry about brown blood, as long as it is not accompanied by pain, cramps, bad odour etc. Body even throws clots too, and if there is anything black inside, then you have to go to OB/Gyn or Vaidya.
This ayurvedic theory is discussed at length on

dont let these people freak you out about deadly infection or pregnancy (well the pregnancy im not so sure about) but anyways, i had my period and then had brown discharge (heavily) for a whole month after that, until my next period came. after THAT period it cleared up. i was going to go to the doctor but never got around to it because i thought it would stop. then my period came around and i said i'll go to the doc if it continues after this period, but it didnt. brown is definitely old blood. why is it oming out, i dont know. ive heard that it could have something to do with cysts, but im not sure. i had a small cyst that i was diagnosed with before, but i dont see how that would make you bleed (i researched everything there ever was about cysts). but u cuold just go to the doctor if you are curious, i wish i would have because now i'll never know.
