Some days are great... and some days are not.
Sometimes a celebrity doesn't not realize what fame and fortune has changed their lifestyles or personalities. When something happens that makes them realize what has happened, they don't always like what they see.

this was refering to how fame and fortune was takining him farther away from his mountain roots. I am not totally sure on this. You should watch the movie about him it tells a lot about his family life where most of his songs came from. His father was very opposed to his music carrer as he thought John should stay and tend the homestead.

It means that some days were great, beautiful and strong like diamonds and others were bad and brough you down like a stone. The fear of loosing his own true self and becoing what he disliked.
