Several reasons. First off as many pointed out N. Korea has nukes and would use them if we attacked directly.

Second, Saddam was paying suicide bombers.

Third, we are trying to get Iran taken care of first and to do that we needed to surround them with democratic governments. Afghanistan on one side, Iraq on the other. That way the Iranian people will rise up and toss off their oppressive government. (At least that was the plan.)

Fourth, Iraq had violated numerous UN resolutions and the UN had no plans to enforce them so we had to step in so the UN wouldn't look totally useless. (Bunch of ungrateful ingrates.)

North Korea has no oil and they have a bigger army and access to nuclear material.
If you notice since the Korean war stalemate (because technically we are still at war with them. An armistice was declared in July 1953 but no peace treaty was ever signed) and the loss of the Vietnam police action turned war, we have not attacked any country that could possible fight back and beat us.
Look on where we have attacked
Grenada- mid 80's ooh bit threat there. A country smaller than Rhode Island
Panama- Had to get that big bad dictator, we were shaking in our shoes
Kosovo-Yugoslavia was already in tatters so we helped stop a genocide we really did not do much in terms of fighting
Iraq- we knew they did not have what it took to defeat us since they had been decimated by the Iran/Iraq War of the 80's and the 1st Gulf War

The US would not escalate to armed conflict with North Korea for 2 reasons:

1) US forces in the DMZ, who would be most vulnerable amount to 37,000 troops (at last check in 2004. The number was to be reduced by 1/3 to support the war in Iraq), while North Korea has an army of approximately 1.8 million troops with a reserve force of 4.7 million troops.
2) North Korea apparently has gone nuclear and Kim Jong-il is not the sharpest pencil in the box and can stir up trouble we cannot deal with right now.

Do you want to start a war again with north korea? If you remember we fought the Korean War already. Read your history books, you might actually learn something.

The bush administration grew to become into 'careful' in direction of N korea no longer because of the fact they have been afraid of nukes yet because of the fact N korea grants an invaluable distration to china which permits the U. S. persue its very own pursuits interior the pacific. as properly N korea grew to become into in no way an instantaneous danger to the U. S.. Iraq grew to become into somewhat shooting at our planes and crap.

North Korea can be controlled easier by China than slugging it out for nothing. Remember North Korea has very little of naything but manpower. SInce they are already starving and freezing things are solvable without military intervention.

Because he attempted to talk the UN into be relevent. They already had a bunch of resolutions against IRAQ & weren't taking any action. They chose to be irrelevent & the US would have been also if they took no action.

If the UN had taken action the US might have been able to stop NK if the UN was interested in living up to it's charter.

North Korea could be backed by its neighbor - China. The U.S. should not want to go there.

North Korea is backed by China and the last time the US interfered round there they lost a lot of troops and did not win, that's why.
