78' Chevy 350 V8 doesnt always start.turns motor over but not enough to start. (racing flexplate and gear reduction starter brand new!) Just cant get right connection....shimmed many different ways and cant find a way that works. Started on last flexplate and starter for about a month then it stopped working. Just put new parts in and I dont wanna keep sinking money into parts. Help me!!

Sounds like the bendix is giving up and stops engaging with the flywheel.Replace the bendix drive(celanoid) on top of starter.It is not the motor that is bad.As for the whining,you may need to add an extra shim plate or two in between starter and engine.Oh yes, even new equipment may have defects.If you bought the starter new, get it replaced.You may also want to check the flywheel for bad , worn or broken teeth.As this may cause the starter not to work properly.Drop the inspection pan at bottom of bell housing and turn the flywheel using a large screw driver.Mark the flywheel so that you know you inspected all its' teeth.

Take the starter off and connect 2 wires to the battery (positive and negative) and see if it spins and it will tell you if it is any good. Or it could also be the teeth off the starter or off the flywheel. also battery may not be big enough....
