lion, witch , and the wardrobe. the entire series is great.
Harry potter gets pretty dark at some points
At that age i really liked the black stallion series by walter farley
pierce anthony xanth series is pretty good.
the redwall series by Brian Jacques would be great

I think 'Night' is a good book
