Sounds like a ballast resistor. The resistor cuts the voltage down to 7 or so during normal running to reduce wear on the coils. When the starter is pushed the resistor is bypassed to allow the full 12 volts to reach the starter when it's needed. If the resistor or the connection to the resistor is bad your bike will run with the button pushed and die immediately after it is released. The resistor is ceramic with 2 wires connected to it, usually with blade connectors. You can test your resistor with an ohm meter. Not sure what your bike requires but my Goldwing has a 3 ohm resistor. The continuity between the 2 connections with the ignition off should read 3 ohms on mine. Any different reading means the resistor has failed.

When you say it will "run" while the starter is engaged, I assume you mean it appears to be firing. I would also guess that if you attempted to rev up the engine, it wouldn't happen. I think you should check the compression first, and if that is good, the timing is probably wrong.

Does it have a solenoid relay? if so,verify it and the wires on the solenoid for moisture and/or touch. water-resistant the solenoid and connections with rubber or silicone spray. additionally, verify the starter solenoid for moisture. water-resistant it, too. it fairly is beneficial to ascertain the wiring harness itself. Mice would are becoming to be into it and chewed the countless wires inflicting them to short out.
