They are working hard to clean up the area, and lots of yuppies moved in because it was the only area left that is affordable. But there still is a higher than average amount of street crime and problems.

So my feeling would be if the hotel had good security and you have friends nearby I wouldn't rule it out. But I definately wouldn't walk to my car alone at night, or walk in the area after dark. The one good thing is there is a much higher police presence there because they are trying hard to curtail it (a good friend lives there, and he's a Boston cop lol). I am always cautious when I go there, but I do go. Just be sure to stay aware of your surroundings. So if you have another option, I'd consider it, but if it's something like the Courtyard that is pretty well self contained so you should be fine, especially if you stay on the property.

Anywhere you go there is going to be danger. The world is not a safe place. Dorchester has it's nice areas and not so nice areas, just like any other place. Dorchester is the largest section of Boston. There is Fields Corner, Uphams Corner, Codman Square, Savin Hill, Lower Mills area, etc, etc. When you have a large, urban area there is bound to be some riff raff somewhere. I wouldn't suggest walking in the dark, late at night in any area but if you are just sleeping at a hotel, I wouldn't worry unless you think the police are going to come up in the hotel over a drug raid or something. Anyhow, if you are hesitant to return, don't. Try staying at a pricier place downtown.

First of all, Andrew Square is part of South Boston, not part of Dorchester. Your hotel was presumably the one on Boston Street overlooking the freeway (two blocks from the ONLY deli in the Boston area that makes homemade Polish sausage!) and that is only a few blocks from the Dorchester line. That area is quite safe; there are other parts of Dorchester less so.

By the way, if you keep walking down Boston Street you'll happen upon one of the greatest restaurants in Boston, on the left hand side. The name is it's address (which I cannot recall).

Some areas of Dorchester are pretty dangerous and some areas of Dorchester are nicer. Andrew Square isn't one of the worst areas (although I don't think it's one of the best either). If you're near the T then I would say it's fine to stay there or if you take a cab to your hotel. The hotel itself I would assume is safe, so the concern is getting to the hotel safely. Like I said, if it's near the T and especially during the day, then it's fine but I wouldn't walk around there at night.

I've lived in Dorchester for 30 years- and have always gotten a kick out of listenting to outsiders "expert" advice on it- typically from racist suburbanites or know-it-all college kids whose 1 or 2 years in the city has made them all-knowing.

Dorchester is the biggest part of Boston- and was originally a resort town (prior to being incoporated into Boston) - it's no more dangerous then any other city area- and quite tame compared to areas of New York, Los Angeles, Newark or Chicago.

Allot of yuppies have been moving in- but when their kids get old enough for school they move out- they say its because of the schools- which prompts them to move to suburban towns where the standardized testing results are no better- leaving me to have to assume they just don't want their little Codi and Olivia's going to school with any Juans or Tyrones.

Allot of people won't move to Dorchester because they simply don't want to live arround black people-

It is no worse or better then other parts of the city,

Steadily getting "better"- sounds like where you'll be is fine-
bad crap happens in small towns too- watch the news- you should always be aware of your own safety- if you're not going to enjoy yourself because you're going to be freaked out then find somewhere else- but that would be too bad Boston (including Dorchester) is Awesome!

Depends on which part you go to. All cities have their good areas and not so good areas.
