1998 Dodge Caravan 3.0L V6 just up and died and will not start.?

Okay friday my wife was the driving when the van just died. My first thought was ignition coil but it wasnt so I borrowed my friends Drb scan tool and it came back with an error code P0340 that said in the haynes Manual No Cam Signal at PCM which means No camshaft signal detected during engine cranking. From what I have been told that means the camshaft sensor is bad and needs to be replaced but they said I have to replace the whole distributor since the camshaft sensor is built in. What I would like to know is that right or not and to get a second opinion on what that error code really means and what to do?

Yes this sounds correct.It is easier to replace the dist. than to rebuild.Most electrical components are like a light bulb, they just go.If you are inexperienced, because you are working with something that has to do with the timing.Take it to a garage.If you remove the cap and mark where the rotor is,then remove the bolt and hold down clamp at base of dist.. then disconnect the harness going to dist.Remove dist. and replace with new Dist having the rotor in the same position.You may have to move the rotor back and forth as you seat the dist.Remember to also mark the position of the dist before you pull it out.Verifying the position of the rotor once in.Replace the hold down clamp and bolt, tighten.Replace harness connection and cap.You may also want to disconnect the battery ground cable before attempting the removal of dist.Once having everything back to normal.Replace battery ground cable.The engine logic module should set the timingand the code should be erased. If she pulled off the battery cable, then placed it back on and it "did the comparable project," the engine wasn't working. For it to run back, it could would desire to start. And if all of it started, it capacity you have ghosts. Wait til Halloween and scare the little ones with it. charge admission to have them attempt it.
