Are you using a pressed blush or a creme? If it's pressed (my personal preference), I use a contoured blush brush. Swirl the brush into the powder and tap off any excess (if it looks like there's no excess, blow on it a little bit anyway). Smile and then lightly sweep the brush up the apple of your cheek. If it's too dark, just lightly blend it in a little with your fingers.

As frivolous as it sounds, the right brush really does make ALL the difference. Bobbi Brown is basically the goddess of makeup brushes, but they are hella high. Another super line of brushes (and cosmetics) is by Sonia Kashuk. You can find them at Target. They're MUCH more affordable than BB's and almost just as good!

Apply it using a very fluffy, powder brush - something that is dome shaped with lots of soft bristles. The softer, the better! You can pick up these types of brushes from department store counters as well as your local drug store.

Apply the blush using your newly found fluffy brush starting on the apples of your cheeks and swishing the brush upwards towards your temples. To find the apples of your cheeks, smile real big and chees-like - the parts that stick out like, ahem, apples, those are them! Use your brush and swirl it in small, slow circles to help diffuse the color onto your cheeks instead of letting it sit and concentrate on a single spot, or a dot as you said.

You also want to make sure that you don't overdo it, so only pick up a small amount of blusher and build it up. It's far easier to build color than it is to lighten it! In the case that you overdo it, you can brush some loose powder on to help lighten it back to a normal shade you'd feel comfortable wearing.

This stinks, but splurge on a more expensive brush. They're usually better about it. Also, be sure to tap or blow off excess blush before you apply it or a bunch of it will come off in one spot like the dot.

Christine M had the best responce thus far, just remember to stay away from garish colors as well. Keep your blush color as natural to your own skin tone as possible.
If you have light hair and a "peaches and cream" skin tone, go with peachy shades.
If you have medium skin color with darker hair, go towards brick or rose shades....etc.

You can even just use a bronzer as a more natural blusher for warmer months.

Stay away from overly shimmery shades during the daytime, freakish pinky shades at any time or deep red.
As we come into spring, lighter shades will be more abundant, some will have a bit of a shimmer..but use those sparingly during the day...or not at all. They're best for evening.

Also, try to stay away from creame' blushes in warmer months...or you'll be looking like a faded drag queen by late afternoon and your neck will glow like you have a rash! (creame' blushes have a tendency to melt! YUCK!)

when you apply blush you can't just make a circle. First you smile and the big round parts of your cheek that stand out the most (called your apples) you apply the blush to them. then you can take your brush and kinda blend the blush upwards and outwards.

Use a big brush & after your done swirling the brush in your blush, tap it out before you apply it. Then use soft sweeping motions from the apples of your cheeks backward a little & downward a little. Make sure you blend well.

I just don't bother with blush because it isn't natural. I enjoy looking like myself.
