No such thing as cheap horsepower. Speed costs, how fast can you afford to go?

The most cost-effective performance improvement I can think of straight off the bat would be to sell this truck and get a Ranger with the 4.0 V6 in it.

In all honesty, your best bet is to pull the stock 2.3 liter (inline) 4 banger, and put in a 2.3L turbo out of a Merkur XR4Ti, or the like. These motors can be found REALLY cheap (under $400 all day long) and would swap RIGHT into your ranger. Trying to breath any life into that little naturally aspirated 2.3 you have now is like beating a dead horse. You will NEVER get more than an extra 10 horspower or so without spending A LOT of money (i'm talking well over $1500), and even then, you'd never get the amount of power you'd gain from just throwing in the turbo motor. Right now you're making 100 hp, and that's on a good day. A motor out of a Merkur will start you out at over 170hp (that's 70% more than you have right now!!) and you could easily get that over 200 with a few mods.

Go to this forum, these guys really now their stuff!! http://forum.merkurclub.com/forum/

OK cheapest to most pricey... A good air filter for racing. A set of headers, larger fuel injectors, larger exhaust.

The pricey issue is head and valves and cam work. Then you have the high end fun of turbo and or nitrous.

lower profile tires will give you a smaller diameter and a lower gear ratio but less mileage. careful not to go too wide or they will weigh more and give more wind resistance and less mileage. Your speedometer will read faster than you are really going but you will notice a faster hole shot.

No. And it is an inline four, not a V.
