We've been here 6 years, and are originally Scots. The weather is wonderful in the winter, with only the occasional bad thunderstorm. May and June are bearable to glorious, depending on how you like your sunshine. July, August and most of September can be very hot. Kids can't really play outside in 100+ and you end up shop-hopping to stay in the A/C. Still, Houston is geared up to it, with many malls and indoor play areas, and many subdivisions have community pools (you kind of end up living it them in August!). The only really "cold" months are January & February, but then you still only need a jacket and scarf for about 2 weeks. You have to watch out during hurricane season, but we've only had to evacuate once in 6 years.
For real estate, the market is pretty static, so don't expect to make much money on a house if you buy it and sell within 5 years. There is lots of housing in every price range, and Texas houses can be HUGE! Watch out for MUD taxes and Housing Association taxes if you are buying, some of them can be quite a steep hidden cost. Also watch out for areas that are prone to flooding. If you ask the realtor you hire they will tell you which ones they are. Flood insurance can be quite expensive in some parts of Sugarland for instance for this reason.
The best school areas are Katy and the Woodlands. Katy is actually quite accessible to downtown now that the Westpark Tollway has opened up.
Good luck moving, once you get used to it being so flat, Houston has a lot to offer.

With the invention of air conditioning the weather is not an issue. Until your a/c goes down. And then even native Texans suffer. But this does make for very mild Winters in fact Winter does not really begin until January and by March it is Spring.
Houston Area Realtor's website listed all properties for sale by zip code in Houston.

The housing market in Houston has not seen the overpricing the rest of the country has seen in the last few years. Prices have gone up but not at the rates in places like CA or FL. In the last year as other markets have been adjusting down in price, Houston had an influx of new residents due to Hurricane Katrina. This has kept prices steady. Currently it is a seller's market. There is more demand that available stock but that may be changing in the coming years.

Get ready for some bad hair days! It is humid and hot most of the year. You will really miss the summers in Michigan.
Plus side- you use less moisturizer on your skin because the moisture is in the air.
I live in Dallas & my brother lived in Houston so I would visit frequently.
