Today while going down the road, I accedentally shifted my automattic transmission from drive to reverse (while going 35 mph). The tires started spinning in reverse really fast. The check enging light came on, and my truck wouldn't move (by the way I have a '96 F-250 Gas). None of the gears would work. When I put it in park, it made a grinding noise. Also, there was no power steering, I popped the hood, noticed that the powersteering valve thingi had popped off. There was power steering fluid all over the place. I put the lid back on. I started my truck, and I think everything seemed to be working, however I haven't drove it over 20 mph yet. What I'm really concerned about is the transmission. Also, does the transimission have anything to do with the powersteering.?

I'm sure you never did you transmission any good. Crawl under the truck & check your driveshaft by running you hand down both sides. If you feel any abnormalities the shaft may have a slight twist. Also check your u-joints for possible damage.

The power steering has nothing to do with the tranny. The filler cap coming loose on the PS pump was caused by the engine stalling & you steering the truck with the engine off.

When you placed it in park was again, because the engine had stalled & you were still moving. The grinding sound you heard, was the park pin.

Pull the dipstick & smell the fluid & check for particles. If fluid level is OK take it for a drive. If you are realy worried pull the pan & look for snap rings & pieces of clutch packs.

OH NO! Yes this is a major problem! Get it looked at and DO NOT DRIVE IT ANYWHERE! you have caused major damage not only to the gears themselves but also to the torque converter as well.....

as for Power steering fluid.... most of the time it is transnission fluid and they cycle through through each other to help in cooling and de airing the fluid.
