Sorry, MacArthur was no kook. He was a very difficult man with ego problems but not a kook. His campaign across the South Pacific was pure genius.

But he was a glory hound, despised by the Navy. But was the perfect person to assume the leadership of Japan. He replaced the emperor for about six years. Japan was rehabbed rather quickly.

His difficulty was not in WWII, it was during the Korean War beginning in 1950. He refused a direct order from Truman and was fired. MacArthur had been a general in WWI and Truman a captain of artillery.

The Japanese earned an early end to the occupation by being loyal to the US during the Korean War. Japan provided a logistical base and much industrial power. At the beginning of the Korean War there were very few US soldiers left in Japan to occupy. But the Japanese did not take advantage of that, ergo they earned their sovereignty.

The Japanese Constitution was written John Foster Dulles. (Later he was to be Secretary of State for Eisenhower. His brother, was Allen Dulles, first director of the CIA).

#1--refused to listen to those here who were demanding the emperor be dethroned. He saw that the emperor was stability (and actually risked his neck going against the generals by surrendering). By having the emperor remain the emperor, Japan remained stable and easily governed. Instead of the potential infighting that would have resulted, it became an economic powerhouse.
