I had a meeting with my 8 yr olds teacher today? She all but came out and told me that she thinks that my son has ADD but she did not want to "lable" him so she would not test him for it. She went on to tell me that the next years teacher would probably want to test him tho. So I want to know....... Should I make them test him or should I just wait? This year is the first year that he has gotten less than a B on his report card, but his low grade was a C so its not like he is doing really bad in school this year he is just having a few problems with some of the subjects. All of his grades fluctuate from grading period to grading period. Now his teacher has moved him to a corner of the room so that she can make him focus more on the class work and not the little girl behind him. So what should I do test or wait like she wants to do?

I have a son with ADHD and he failed the first grade because of it. His grades suffered and he spent most of the time in the Principal's office until he started his medication and now his grades are A's and B's. It is obvious my son needed medication to help him focus in school.

With that said, I also have an 8 year old daughter and her teacher suggested that she might have ADHD. But her lowest grade is a C also. She is completely different from my son. But, for the sake of my daughters education I had her tested. The Doctor said my daughter did not have ADHD and said, "I feel that your daughter's teacher just doesn't have a handle on her classroom." The doctor explained to me that before a child can be diagnoised with ADHD the "symptoms" have to greatly effect your childs ability to focus, learn, socialize, etc. In other words - if your child is making pretty good grades then that is a pretty good indication that your child does NOT have ADHD. But like I did, I would suggest that you go ahead and have your child tested by a Doctor (not the school).

Note: I also had a case study done on my daughter and my son - which is where a social worker sits in the classroom for a day or two to observe your childs behavior to help determine if your child truely does show signs of ADHD. I would suggest that you request one done on your child

I would definitely ask the school to test him, if they hem-haw around, go to your Pediatrician, and ask for a note, or prescription for a Full psycho-educational evaluation. Insist on it, it is a slow process, but sounds like there is enough concern to warrant it. Don't worry about the "labels" they are just that, labels. If it will get the help he needs then no worries.
My 12 yr old son was tested at 6, he is added, also has a learning disability. Special education was started, he is now doing great, and mostly working on grade level. My 11 yr daughter is also added, she is in reg classes, but with some minimal accommodations. The testing will show how your child learns best, and then they can accommodate him... keep your chin up, it will get better.
