I remember gangs when I was a kid, the elderly didn't have to cross the street, they could walk amongst us.

We need new laws for those that prey on the elderly.

What do you think should be done?

I think he needs to be incarcerated for life and it needs to be announced to all of the other inmates what he is in there for.. That way he can get a good beating from all the guys who love their mothers and grandmothers!
This was just a senseless act, the man has no conscience and who knows what other crimes he is commiting. Just scum of the earth if you ask me!

What another person does , does not mean that everyone else will do or does the same so to say what have we become isnt right. I know I would never hurt an elderly person or anyone else for that matter unless it was to defend myself.
Now for what should be done, who really knows. It seems like the more security and police there are the more crime there seems to be. Fighting crime is just like trying to fight diseases. Each time a new cure is found another illness takes over just like with crime, as new security and laws come out to stop one crime criminals start doing other crimes. Since it is hard to know who is going to end up commiting a crime its kind of hard to stop a criminal before they act. People one would never expect to harm a fly end up commiting murder. I guess the only real way to rid the world of crime would be to start all over again from scratch but in time there would be crime once again.

Absolutely more police and neighborhood watch people - watching out for the elderly. Possibly vans to transport people who can no longer drive--so that they don't need to walk or take a bus.

I think that the people who did this to such an elderly woman should go to prison for a very long time. I have not read the story yet, I hope that she is doing okay.

Do not neglect base rate!
How often does this actually happen?
You cite one piece of anectdotal evidence, it is not reflective of "what we have become."

There are elderly abuse hotlines to report suspected abuse. Laws are in place to punish these people. I don't think it is a case of preying on elderly, the situation (isolated nursing homes, where family members forget about their relatives) makes it convenient to commit the crime. Similar to the abuse in Abu Ghraib, it was convenient and those people thought they could get away with it.

I think we should take a look at all of the family members dumping their elderly relatives into nursing homes. If the orderlys knew that there were people out there who would be visiting reguarly (and would be able to see and report abuse), then I think we would see less of this abuse.

Unfortunately I don't think much can be done. It all stems back to the parents and how they raise their children and what type of life the raise their child in. Maybe people who are having these children shouldn't be.

You're right though, gangs back in the day were tough but the "rules" were different. Stay away from the elderly and stay away from young children.

Wow. I think we need to learn how to take care of our elderly people better. Lets face it, many of these elderly people have children and grandchildren, but the middle aged group of our society has decided to do their own thing. They have chosen to neglect their parents, and leave them to live alone in this world of desperation. Think about the guy that robbed her. Think of how despite he was to rob that old lady. People in this society
are all on edge. This is a desperate time.

Man...that's really messed up! Take these crazy video games off the market, they plant too many crazy thoughts that kids act out in real life. Allow for law suits to be brought against the makers of these crazy video games. I'll bet they clean up their acts.

Good God, I head about this incident. Im disgusted with the human race! Just disgusted at what we've become.

I think there are too many of us on the planet and we are like too many rats in a cage. We are attacking each other-but in our human world, the rats are not of "equality" like in the wild. WE have a class system; rich and poor. We have government and laws...but soooo many of us choose to ignore them, go against them....its hard to say what to do. Its disgusting and sad. Just so sad. Poor old woman, 101...lived that long to what? be robbed in a walker? Big strong man, robbing her.
