Well I'll be surprised if you get to read this after so many other comments, but its one of those questions you just have to answer.

It does seem alot of people are voting for Elizabeth I (unlike our Irish poster above), but I think a lot of that is to do with the recent TV programme which had her as our greatest ever monarch, although I'm sceptical.

The majority of people who vote for Elizabeth, argue that she was responsible for Englands Empire, well shes wasn't. What Elizabeth did was authorise the use of piracy, which was a continuous thorn in the side of the Spanish, which ultimately allowed England to surpass Spain as the world's leading power. This brings me on to the next argument, and that is Elizabeth was instrumental in defeating the Armada, well again she wasn't. England was saved from invasion by the weather, and if any individual should receive merit, then it should be Sir Francis Drake. Therefore I feel that Elizabeth can no more claim credit for Englands exploits, than Victoria can claim she created the worlds greatest Empire.

There are arguments for and against many monarchs, and i doubt therefore you'll ever get an accurate answer. Therefore I have chosen William I, whose conquest of our island (and especially the domesday book), began a 1,000 years of 'British greatness' which has ultimatley shaped our world today.

King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II father without a doubt. Held on to an Empire through the constitutional crisis, Second World War. Was a man of the people who was willing to go and tour the devastation of the Blitzkreig raids on London.

Of all the British monarchs, King George VI was more willing to spend the time to be with his people. And he was truly the last monarch of the British Empire.

Queen Elizabeth I definetly. There was so much relguious turmoil before she came into power and basically she was the one who said "I have no desire to open windows to men's souls." She started the idea of relgious freedom.
Also she-
kept civil wars at bay
fought off the spanish armada
was able to keep peace with europe, most of the time, though at the expense of her personal life. She would hint that she might be thinking that shewas going to marry some french guy and then some spanish guy and that mostly made sure they wouldn't attack england.
Was the first monarch under which the British had an awseome navy
started colonies in the New World
Managed her personal life

This is a difficult one because having read the previous answers I agree with a lot of them. However, the monarch has ceased to have real power for several hundred years; Edward l was a very powerful king but you would have difficulty in persuading the Scots and the Welsh of his greatness. Most of the so called great monarchs made the lives of their subjects pretty miserable really. Most perople, for example, lived in fear under the Tudors in one way or another.

The kings, to my mind, that were truly great, in that their subjects did not fear them were Charles ll, Edward lV and Richard lll. Before everyone starts shouting about the latter, read your history. He was a good and fair king
