I think I upset somebody today by announcing that the soup looked and tasted like spunk.

Well it did!

similar to other answers the first question is how did you recognise it, but then knowing the pair of you i wouldn't be surprised if a bit of snowballing went on. If you don't like the soup you would be best off throw it at the waiter then run in to the kitchen brandishing a steak knife and kill everyone moving. this way the disappointment will never be repeated.

well, be a bit diplomatic...It might have taken them a whole lot of time to prepare.

Well, i once went to a chinese restaurant and the soup was like molten snot (the kind you have when you have a cold..know what i mean?) And it tasted of raw eggwhites! No-one ate it all except for a friend who's vegetarian and frequently eats that kind of thing at home cos she can make it.

Like you, I couldn't help but fume silently at the fact that I was paying to be served molten snot. But i didn't say anything aloud until after I exited the restaurant.

It does not help matters if you are so graphic about the food. Even if you are sensitive to the chef's feelings, he/she will be defensive about the food that they prepare and cook. Having said that, it is acceptable to be able to complain about food that is not up to standard. You are paying for a service for food that should be palatable. Be careful how you complain about food, especially before you finish your meal and leave. There are so many stories about how chefs and waiters retaliate to complaints, for example, it has been said that, once rectify the meal that you require, they then spit in it, serve it to you and watch you smile and eat the whole meal. It is best that, if you find food distasteful, that you refuse to pay and leave.

You can be honest but try to be nice about it. You are critizicing the food in a public place and others can hear you. Tell the manager or staff aside so they can improve on it. No need for harsh words to call attention.

well i guess you shouldn't say **** but like being honest is good, just don't take it too far. be like "excuse me, but i think maybe the chef should check out the soup, it doesn't taste good at all"

it depends on the exact situation, like if its a big restaurant, go ahead, but if its a little tiny thing u dont wanna upset them, its on a more personal level, but u should still say something, as nicely as possible

I think you should be 'brutally honest' with everyone and everything, especially, if your soup doesn't taste right . !! xx

You gotta be honest, especially when you're paying. Don't go into a resataurant to kid yourself about the quality of the food there.
