Africa has the most diamond mines in the world. Because of this there are many social conflicts. Innocent people have shed blood because over these diamonds. I've always said that I will never buy a diamond.

The largest diamond mining occurs in southern Africa. There are people who are the equivalent of slaves.....being paid almost nothing and living in deplorable conditions that mine for these diamonds. Even very young children are subjected to doing this. There is a high death rate amongst these people because of the poor and inadequate living conditions. Therefore, 'blood' diamonds is referring to the cost of human lives to get these diamonds. I saw something on tv once about this. There were children that had been tortured and maimed/injured by those in charge. It was disgusting! They were missing limbs, eyes, fingers, etc. We say 'blood' to make people think before they buy diamonds from this region. If you ask, in a jewelry store, they must will tell you where their diamonds came from.
