Interval training is the best way of doing this.
Start at a speed just below your current 'cruising' speed. Stay at this speed for 1 min, then go for 1min at a speed slightly higher than your regular speed. Change back to the previous speed for another minute, and then after that increase it again. Keep this up for about 10 mins at least. Train like this 3 times per week.
After a week try to reduce the amount of time you do your slower speed and increase the amount of time you do your higher speed. Keep doing these adjustments each week until you are now running the whole time at higher than your usual 'cruising' speed.
