It's an estimate--it is in the ballpark--but it depends on how accurate the info your friend gave him was--if she gave the correct day for the first day of her last period and if she knows how long each of her menstrual cycles is--(these vary tremendously from 25 days to 35+ days)--and this makes a difference in due date...I'd say the baby's due date is close to teh real one--but there is no way to be 100% sure or accurate...

They measure from the last day of her last menstrual period. That might not be the exact day it happened, but that's the way doctors and nurses usually tell. When she goes in for her first ultrasound, they will have a much more accurate idea of how far along she is exactly and that is when she would most likely find out her due date. At the ultrasound, they measure the baby and it's heartbeat, so they can make a much more educated guess at what gestational stage she is at.
However, might I ask.....Do you think that maybe she knew what days she had sex and what days she didn't? I mean, if you yourself have an idea of when you conceived when you got to the doctor, that can be helpful to their rationale in deciding how far along you are.

well, if it was an ultrasound its possibly pretty accurate...
if it's calculating from the first day of the last period than it could be off a little...
If that's the case, upon getting the first ultrasound they will be able to pinpoint the age a lot better.
Early on in the pregnancy there is little variation in fetal growth.
But regardless, due dates are only an Estimate

at that stage, it's more than likely very accurate. the baby grows at the same rate, being the same size, with all the same characteristics until it is much further along. with her being that early on in the pregnancy, the chances of the doctor being wrong are slim to none.

well i assume the doctor is counting from the 1st day of last peiod and ovulatation usually occurs 2 weeks after and implantion 2 days later so she is probably about 1 week pregnant

It depends on what they're basing it on. When I had my daughter, I knew the day I ovulated, so they were able to give me a very accurate date.

It's very accurate with an ultrasound, but it doesn't mean she will deliver on her due date.

Not verry.
She knows when she had sex; unless she knows when she ovulated as well, that is the most accurate date to go by.
