You make up an excuse and lie, if and only if it is a family member or friend trying to pressure you into something. You'd be surprised the mental games some family members can play in order to gain control over someone.
Otherwise, just tell the truth.

Since it is family I would tread lightly. Just make sure that you have valid plans or you are busy when you know she wants you to join her. Or you could just say that you really don't feel like it, maybe next time. You are not lying and you are not committing to anything in the future.
