The space race actually started back in the mid forties when Germany was defeated. At that time the Americans and the Russians captured German rockets and each secretly took them to their respective countries and started to study and perfect those rockets. Both countries made tremendous progress in developing better and more powerful rockets with the aid of German scientists that were also taken or went willingly to both nations. The Russians maneged to pull it off before the Americans when they launched their first payload into space, which was closely followed by the U.S. The Russians had the lead for many years, being the first nation to put a payload into space, the first to put a man in space, and the first to launch a payload around the moon and the planet Venus. Then America took the lead when they landed the first men on the surface of the moon and brought them back to earth safely. That lead has not been taken from the U.S, since, by the Russians or any other nation.....KECK

Someone below, in one of the answers, gave a date in 1957. I don't know if that's the correct date, but the event that set off the Space Race was when the Soviet Union put up the first satellite into space--they called it Sputnik, and it did happen in 1957. If you google that name, I'm sure you'll get the date. It was seriously embarrassing to the Americans, who claimed that they had superior technology, a superior way of life, etc.

I think it began in 1962 when Russia launched its Sputnik into orbit. President Kennedy in an address vowed to put a man on the moon. We did and beat Russia to the space race.

"History changed on October 4, 1957, when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I. The world's first artificial satellite was about the size of a basketball, weighed only 183 pounds, and took about 98 minutes to orbit the Earth on its elliptical path." (see link to NASA site)
United States "won" the space when there was a "giant leap for mankind" in 1969, despite many skeptics who insisted that the thin walls of the space capsule and very thin space suit would not protect astronauts from heat/cold and deadly high energy radiation on the moon and the Van Allen belt.
The "conspiracy theory" approach to learning is a good way to learn about the technology and sharpen your critical thinking skills. I think you might enjoy some of the sites and videos on the topic.
