I work for General Mills, as a laborer. We are given many paid holidays, that the whole plant shuts down for. Well, I work in the bars department, milk and cereal, and nature valley trail mix bars, and we are set up on 12 hour 3-2 shifts. There was recently a LARGE order placed with our plant for the new Fiber One bars, and we were informed we would be working Easter Sunday. With this being a nationally recognized, and religous holiday, can they really make us work? This holiday is big both in my husbands family and with mine, we are Luthern, lots like Catholic, so we have big family gatherings.

You would just have to ask for the day off, like any other of the 365 days of the year. I'm sure you will be paid overtime for working on a holiday, if you aren't able to find someone to work for you. Talk to your direct supervisor, see if you can make some arrangements.

Contact your local Better Business Bureau, your Unemployment Office (they will have specifics on mandatory overtime law), and your union rep (if you have one).

If your Christian denomination specifically forbids working on Sundays, you can claim a religious exemption. Unless, of couse, you have ignored it up till now. You can also complain to your superior/supervisor about this. If you feel your religious rights are being interfered with, you may have recourse.

Of course, you could do the gracious thing, and simply ask to be excused for 3 hours to attend a local sunrise service, and then work the rest of the day. Explain why it is so important to you! You may achieve a better witness that way.

Yes they can make you work.
Be glad you don't live down south. When I first moved to Orlando they told me that Easter was a northern holiday and that because noone here celebrates it I had to work. At least your company had a better excuse.

yes they can.

companies are not required to give you any holidays off. paid or not. they are only required to pay you overtime wages for any hours over 40 worked in any one week. or 7 day consecutive period.

your options are to use vacation time, get somebody that is schedualed off to work for you, call in sick. or find another job.
