in general, unless depressed, people aren't content with doing nothing at all. therefore when there is nothing stimulating their brains or bodies, or nothing that must be done then there is a general feeling of unrest..... and wha la, they are bored............................. the real question should be why do people always need to be doing something

The root reason for boredom is loneliness.
Think about it. If you are not lonely...you would not be bored!
You have to fill that lonely gap with a friend, pet, plant ,or animal....anything that works.
Added comment after reading yours:
You can be with all the friends that you have. That keeps you going for a while. But when you get down to just you...boredom creeps in.
It is essential to find those things that keep you interested with living.
For me, and many others, "Boredom" would be a luxury!!!

There are always things to do--people use the term "bored" as an excuse to feel sorry for themselves. There is no such thing as nothing to do--one can always walk, exercise, watch TV, clean a room, call a friend, go to the library, watch a movie, go to a restaurant, museum, art gallery, go camping, have a picnic, have a barbecue, study, write someone a letter, clean the garage, take the trash out, rake or shovel the yard--I could go on and on...

Most Existentialist would argue that boredom occurs when one iS grappling with the the definition of life's meaning and purpose. Boredom can be alleviated when one comes to terms with life's givens (ie. Death and Isolation), takes responsibility for their life and its possibilities and lives authentically. I don't necessarily agree with this perspective but its an interesting one nonetheless.

Hello. In my opinion boredom is having no imagination or doing something that gets old after awhile.

I find that I never really get bored, just tired of things. I always seem to be able to find things to do even in the most "boring" situations (reading, talking to people, thinking, writing, whatever) But after doing certain things for awhile it gets old..
example - If I am snowed in for 4 days, I can always find things to do stuck inside my house, but I get sick of being there.
I can always find things to do online, but I get sick of sitting on my computer for a long time.
People who say they're bored alot often have little patience and are lost if they aren't told or given something to do. (kinda like kindergarteners) You just have to learn how to utilize your time and to get active to make your life more fulfilling.

Boredom is neurological. Without adequate sensory stimulation, we can neurological "suffer" what is perceived as "boredom". Prolonged boredom can develop into depression. Extreme sensory deprivation can cause psychosis.

Boredom is a lack of motivation and very close in relationship to depression. It is also a form of torture.

To force people to make something of themselves. Without boredom we likely would not have invented any of the things that have given us our modern civilized life.

The human brain is a complex problem solver. It burns up to I believe 10% of the energy you take in during eating. When the brain has no problems to solve it gets bored.
