because when you play hockey and its 24 degrees on the ice surface the mucus in your lungs condenses (i know thats gross) and also you tend to breathe with your mouth open which also causes the spit to condensate. this combo gives you a bunch of spitting hockey players

If less than ten skaters on a team spit from the opening face off to the end of regulation time, the team gets a two minute bench minor for mucus retention. Spitting by the goalie does not count toward the team total.

They shoot the gatorade in their mouth, they can't take in that much at once. They are only getting some in for the electrolytes and such anyway. The REAL question is why does TV insist on SHOWING it? You know the guy is getting a drink and 9 times out of 10 they spit out some it seems.

Because when hockey players are on the ice they exercise at near maximal capacity for the lungs and heart. Therefore, when they get back to the bench they are gasping for air and do not want to swallow the wonderful buildup in their mouth.
After that, it's more of a habbit.

also when they drink their water while sitting on the bench they don't swallow it all because they don't want to cramp up. So they let it rest in their mouth a little and when its time for their next shift they spit it out.

There can be many reasons... since they are playing on ice and not on a wooden floor, they can... also they spit when they rinse their mouths with water... it is also hard to swallow when you are breathing heavily, tired, and your throat is all dry.

I dunno.
Honestly, now days all guys got a spitting problem. During High School there were actual guys that would spit on the carpet, very icky.
Spitting is just a manly thing to do....lol...I mean they gotta have something...

Cause we dip chaw constintly, it becomes a habit. also you don't want to swallow water it'll cramp you up and you get a bit of a cotton mouth going playin
