cat. it has always been a cat.
cats to me, are reasonably low maintenance. they sleep a lot (like me). they're relatively quiet (only the occasional meow) and they pretty much eat, sleep and use the bathroom. They groom themselves and keep themselves very clean. None of my cats were ever smelly. All I had to do was clean the litter box daily and give them food and water daily and they were content. If I had to be out of the house for several hours I didn't return to a house turned upside down.
I've had several other pets (a dog, a chicken, a duck, fish, a lizard, a peacock, finches, a cockatiel, a gerbil, to name a few) but time and time again I go back to ideal pet, THE CAT!

The Best Pet I ever had and is an ideal pet is a ferret... They are natures little clowns. If bought from a reputable breeder and descented you couldn't ask for more... They can be litter trained like a cat and play until the drop...can be walked on a leash and are the center of attention everywhere you take them... I used to wear mine around my shoulders when ever I went into town... Everyone would think it was a fur scarf around my neck and then Romeo would move his tail or head and they'd jump 10 ft . Then the crowd would form and everyone would want to feel or hold him...They actual have a dance they do * Called the Dance of Joy* Where they arch their backs and scoot across the floor sideways while chattering gleefully... Cutest darn pet I ever had..

Read that article from Life magazine - it's about the new "supercat" breed, Toyger.
For my ideal pet...I'd have to say that ideally, I'd have a few different pets at once. I'd love a big Boxer and a cat or two, and maybe even a terrestrial turtle. A little mutt from the animal shelter would be fun, too...
I never had anything but fish when I was growing up, until 8th grade, when I got a rabbit from a friend who was moving away and couldn't keep her. I'm not a big fan of bunnies anymore. ;) Interesting question; I'm having fun reading through the answers.

Mine are Dog 1 Cat 2 Frogs 2 fish (too many to count)!
I'd love another dog but room and time don't allow!
I've kept lots of different pets and loved them all!
A tigers place as much as I love All big cats is in the Wild!
Our pet cats may be small but each and every one of them is a tiger inside!

At the moment i have 10 Ferrets, 6 Rabbits, 3 dogs and 2 Golden Rosella Parakeets.
I would love to have some ducks but there is a limit as to what you can keep in a bungalow garden.

I would love a cat-
but not just any cat- an oriental breed of cat.
I would like one of these becasue I feel we would have similar personalities. This particular breed of cat is well known for never shutting up and for assuming everything it touches or sees, is his,
be so cool- two headonistics in the same home!!!

I have to say the ideal pet i would have is the one i have now, he is a white german shepherd and he adores us and is so loyal friendly and protective and if he could live as long as us i would be happy. for a dream pet that would not be possible it would probably be a tiger, but only if i knew i could wrestle and mess around with it and be safe around others.
good question though.
