The answer to your question is never. Besides I'm part American Indian through my mother and father like a lot of other people here in Kentucky. Granted the American Indians weren't treated very well by any of the Europeans that came to the Americas but you can't easily force people off of land that they have been on for several generations especially when they far outnumber the ones who the land used to belong to. Besides you shouldn't feel bad you didn't do it.

The American Indians had no organized title to land, they fought each other over hunting territory and posession of settlements. and traded the rights to use land. They got the land by migrating over from Asia and living there. Other people, the Europeans, got the land by migrating from Europe and living there. Ownership was somewhat nebulous at first. Different nations claimed the Americas, land and people they had never seen, in the name of their kings. Then the land was divided among various nobles and some bold colonists. Then there were wars with various tribes and other nations fought over the territory. Some nations sold out their claims. The Indians lost the wars and their claims to the land through right of conquest.
The UK used to be Celtic, then the Angles, Saxons and Danes came, kicked out the Briton Celts and founded England. England conquered Wales, Scotland and Cornwall. The Germanic tribes conquered Europe and were absorbed in most areas by the native people. The borders of modern Europe were established by royal claims and conquests, including the removal, ethnic cleansing, of people from some areas and suppression of ethnic groups by other nations. Will the German areas of Alsace and Lorraine be transferred to German administration? Will the descendants of Germans living now be given back their ancestral lands in Danzig and East Prussia? Will the Basques have their own country? No.
The American Indians were conquered, put on reservations, some very large and rich, were treated like defeated countries. Then they were made citizens, but with special rights, due to having been nations. Even the State of Texas was once a nation and they have the right to divide Texas into 5 states, plus their territorial waters go out 12 miles and the U. S. waters only go out 3 miles. The Texas Rangers can arrest someone 10 miles out, but the Coast Guard can't arrest anyone more than 3 miles out. Texas fought Mexico for independence and won.
Who is the rightful owner of any piece of land, the descendant of whoever was there hundreds or thousands of years ago or the people who have taken it and made it theirs? Possession is what counts.

Hate to tell ya but they are never going to get it back. Now this is only my opinion but it does not help their argument when the only land they seem to ask for is the land that has major revenue due to tourism. Prime example is Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills in South Dakota. There was never any mention of wanting land back until the monument was carved, the area was made a national park. It got even more eye appealing when big gigs like the Sturgis bike rally and the corvette shows started up. Its all about $$$ and the govt. is not going to give that up.

Yeah, right, that will happen! Why would the U.S. offer to return the land? The Indian nations are probably better off today due to our progress. The highest rate of alcoholism and school dropouts (illiteracy) is amongst the American Indians, yet they continue to recieve Government grants and no telling how much they make off of their Casinos.
